New technology

Rebar Reinforcement

A plastic carabiner strong enough to hold its own next to aluminium. Inside, a bent carbon reinforcement carries the tensile load, the plastic provides the shape.

The carabiner is a two-component part made of short-fibre-reinforced polyamide. Embedded in it are bent profiles of continuous-fibre-reinforced plastic: a round profile in the highly loaded core, a flat profile at the edge.

From wire to carabiner

Carbon wires in different diameters
  1. 01

    Pultrusion

Unidirectional carbon rovings and a thermoplastic matrix are formed into wire-shaped semi-finished products.

  2. 02

    Wire bending

Local heating and cooling combined with machine wire forming turn the semi-finished products into three-dimensional rebars.

  3. 03

    Inserting

The reinforcement sits in the injection mould of the carabiner, exactly along the load path.

  4. 04

    Overmoulding

The plastic encloses the reinforcement, protects it and turns it into a load-bearing part. The filling study shows it step by step.

  5. 05

    The carabiner

Twice the load capacity of unreinforced plastic, around 1,400 N in simulation.

K-Zeitung,

Hybridtechnologie: So nimmt es Kunststoff mit Alu auf

K-Zeitung presents the carabiner demonstrator: in simulation, the reinforcement doubles the maximum load and cuts the displacement to a quarter. Ronald Müller explains why a carabiner forgives no design errors and where replacing metal saves weight and CO₂.
